| Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra |
When Rachel Alexandra heads to the paddock for Saturday's 1 1/16-mile New Orleans Ladies, 189 days will have passed since the Woodward. That's plenty of time. But Rachel's connections gave her plenty of rest and recovery, then encountered roadblocks in the form of bad weather once Rachel resumed training.
As brilliant as Zenyatta's races have been to her adoring fans, her workouts have left trainer John Shirreffs with the same impression.
Earlier this winter, WinStar Farm won the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs with Rule. On Saturday, they will return with another of their top Derby prospects, Super Saver, who will head a field of seven in the $300,000 Tampa Bay Derby.
Noble's Promise has raced exclusively on synthetic and turf surfaces to this point in his career, but there are reasons to believe that the Grade 1 winner might be an even better horse on dirt. More will be learned Saturday, when Noble's Promise runs in the Grade 2, $300,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
The elusive first stakes win arrived for Striking Dancer in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 14. What comes next in Saturday's $250,000 Santa Margarita Handicap will give owner Steve Stan Stables and trainer Kenneth McPeek a gauge on where she ranks in the nation - against the undefeated Zenyatta.
Interactif, third in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf last November, is among seven 3-year-olds entered in the $150,000 San Felipe Stakes on Saturday. The San Felipe Stakes is run over 1 1/16 miles and is led by Caracortado and Sidney's Candy.
Monmouth Park will face a number of complications both before and during its 50-day summer meet, from allocating limited stall space to satisfying the diverse needs of in-state and out-of-state horsemen, many of whom will face long lines to get into rich races.
Hurricane Ike's 3-year-old debut finally occurs in a $46,000 allowance race at Santa Anita on Thursday, a month after trainer John Sadler had hoped.
